EL JUEGO DE LA AMBIGÜEDAD

Es un juego que sale mucho en los libros de lingüística.
Se trata de frases en las que algo no está muy claro, que resultan inevitablemente ambiguas. En el weblog MEMEX hablé del juego:

Copio aquí una pequeña parte de lo que publiqué en el weblog  MEMEX para recordar las reglas:

Steven Pinker, que estudió con Chomsky, se refiere en su libro Cómo funciona la mente a frases ambiguas como:

1. “Hildegard quiere casarse con un culturista”

¿Hildegard quiere casarse con un culturista en particular o frecuenta los gimnasios buscando uno?

2. “Cada 45 segundos un hombre sufre un golpe en la cabeza en España”

¡Pobre tipo!

El juego consiste en escribir frases ambiguas con componentes equívocos e indefinidos.

Otra frase ambigua sería:


“Un hombre besa a una mujer cada cinco segundos”


¿Cómo podemos medir o calcular la ambigüedad de esta frase?

Se podría decir que la ambigüedad de una frase se mide por el número de posibles interpretaciones a que da lugar. Mientras más interpretaciones, más ambigüedad. En el caso anterior podríamos entender:

a) Un hombre (concreto) besa a una mujer (concreta)
b) Un hombre (cualquiera) besa a una mujer (concreta)
c) Un hombre (concreto) besa a una mujer (cualquiera)
d) Un hombre (cualquiera) besa a una mujer (cualquiera)

Aquí hay, pues, cuatro interpretaciones posibles. Todas ellas se basan en la diferencia entre los entes particulares y los generales.

Quizá en el juego no debamos limitarnos a la cantidad y podamos buscar también frases absolutamente ambiguas, en las que no sepamos quién (uno, varios o todos) hizo qué, cuándo lo hizo, etcétera. Como el clásico de los libros de lingüística de Noam Chomsky:

"Ayer vi a Juan mientras corría"
